How We Deliver Support
Three ways, and the right one depends on the problem rather than on what is convenient for us.
- Over the phone. Free, and often enough on its own. A surprising number of problems are a
setting, a stuck print job, or a password, and there is no reason for anyone to drive anywhere or take control
of your screen for that.
- Remote session. For anything that needs hands on the machine but not hands on the hardware.
You stay at your desk, you watch what we do, and you end the session whenever you want. Most software,
configuration, email, and malware work is faster this way than waiting for a visit.
- On site, within 48 hours. For hardware, networks, printers, and anything involving more than
one machine. We come to your home or office.
What We Help With
- Computers running slowly, freezing, or crashing
- Machines that will not start or will not finish starting
- Viruses, malware, and the pop-ups that claim your computer is infected
- Email that will not send, will not receive, or has stopped syncing
- Wi-Fi and network problems, including printers and devices that keep dropping off
- Software installation, updates, and programs that stopped working after one
- New computer setup and moving your files across from the old one
- Backups, and recovering files when there was no backup
- Password and account lockouts
- Ongoing support for small offices that have no IT staff of their own
If your problem is not on that list, it is still worth a phone call. The call is free and we will tell you honestly
whether it is something we handle.
The Evolution of Computer Support
Enjoy a little article on how our computer support in the industry has evolved over the many years leading to our now
current advancement of remote support.
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Bureau of Labor Statistics, between the years 1990 and 1997, the percentage
of households that owned computers sharply increased from 15 percent to 35 percent. The introduction of Graphical
User Interfaces (GUIs) made computer operations more accessible to the average individual by lessening the learning
curve required to operate a computer. Computers were quickly replacing typewriters but they were still unfamiliar to
the general population.
With a typewriter, the average user was usually able to be self-serviced by the operator. Because typewriters are
fairly simple machines, the problems were often able to be easily diagnosed, understood, and fixed, while computers
were far more complex. Hardware and software working together added a new dimension to operating problems and the
average person was rarely equipped with the knowledge and experience to diagnose, let alone fix, issues that
arose.
If a problem couldn’t be fixed by simply restarting the computer, a computer technician would need to be consulted.
Often, a large yellow phonebook would have to be hauled out to try to find a local IT technician to take a look at
it. Once a technician was found, they would need to be scheduled to physically come to the computer or the heavy
machine would need to be hauled into a shop. This process took time and a fairly simple issue could require days to
complete the steps to get the machine operational again.
Fast forward thirty years. As of 2016, 89% of households own a computer. Dozens of operating systems have come and
gone. No longer are computers bulky and plugged into giant CRT monitors. Your mouse no longer has a wire tail and
actual roller balls. You might not even use a mouse at all with touchscreen and voice-activated technology.
Information is now stored in a cloud, not on floppy discs, CDs, or memory sticks.
Computers and Computer Support have significantly evolved and receiving help with operating issues can be easier than
ordering a pizza. Today, you don’t even have to leave your home or even have a technician physically examine your PC
to resolve a large number of issues. Screen-sharing and remote access technology allow both you and your technician
the freedom to quickly resolve issues anywhere and anytime.
What has not changed is the part that matters when it is your machine and your deadline: somebody who has seen the
problem before has to look at it. The phonebook is gone and the three-day wait is gone. Reaching a technician who
knows your setup is still the whole job.
